45 Days is Not Long Enough For Critical Look at Keystone XL
On April 5, 2011, the NRDC and 30+ other organizations sent a letter to the US State Department asking for a longer comment period concerning the Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement for the proposed Keystone XL Pipeline. The current comment period would run 45 days and many think that, that is not enough time to be able to address the growing concerns of the public over the project. The letter asked for the new comment period to run 120 days, which would allow time for field hearings in the regions that the pipeline is slated to run through.
This request comes in the wake of The New York Times editorial that calls the Keystone XL Pipeline “environmentally risky and unnecessary”. The NRDC believes that if the comment period is extended the State Department will come to the same conclusion.
