Senator Ben Nelson Believes Nebraska has Supreme Authority
The Omaha World-Herald reported that U.S. Senator Ben Nelson has come forward and expressed that Nebraska should have supreme authority over the proposed Keystone XL pipeline path through Nebraska.
“The location is the state’s responsibility and authority, and I hope the state doesn’t just acquiesce and by silence not exercise its responsibilities, because it has responsibilities and they should do something affirmatively — either yes or no on the location. Not a maybe, not sitting back in their hallowed offices watching others work on this — they need to be engaged,” Nelson said during his weekly conference call with Midlands reporters.
The current proposed path for the pipeline would run through the Ogallala Aquifer in Nebraska. Senator Mike Johanns, of Nebraska, has expressed concern about having a pipeline run through the aquifer that provides 8 states with water.
A decision over the pipeline is said to be made before the end of 2011.
