TransCanada Ads Booted from UNL’s Memorial Stadium
University of Nebraska – Lincoln Athletic Director Tom Osbourne (who has more or less been worshipped as a god for decades by Cornhusker football fans) announced Wednesday that the athletic department has ended a sponsorship agreement with TransCanada because the Keystone XL pipeline proposal has become “too controversial.” A “Husker Pipeline” video sponsored by TransCanada at last Saturday’s game against Fresno State drew boos from the crowd and brought the issue to a head. As reported by the Daily Nebraskan, Osbourne emphasized that the department wants to stay non-political and avoid any affiliations that would be divisive for fans.
[A little personal background: When I was living in Grand Island, NE as a kid in the 80s, one of the carpool moms had a big van entirely customized inside and out with Husker logos, red upholstery, a horn that played the Husker fight song, and a framed photo of Tommy Osbourne behind the driver’s seat. Getting booted from Memorial Stadium by Osbourne has major symbolic value.]
It seems that the TransCanada public relations campaign is ramping up in a big way as the State Department decision looms.
